Abstract:The ocean is closely related to global warming and on-going climate change by regulating amounts of carbon dioxide through its interaction with the atmosphere. The monitoring of ocean carbon dioxide is important for a better understanding of the role of the ocean as a carbon sink, and regional and global carbon cycles. This study estimated the fugacity of carbon dioxide (ƒCO 2 ) over the East Sea located between Korea and Japan. In situ measurements, satellite data and products from the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) and the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) reanalysis data were used through stepwise multi-variate nonlinear regression (MNR) and two machine learning approaches (i.e., support vector regression (SVR) and random forest (RF)). We used five ocean parameters-colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM; <0.3 m −1 ), chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a; <21 mg/m 3 ), mixed layer depth (MLD; <160 m), sea surface salinity (SSS; 32-35), and sea surface temperature (SST; 8-28 • C)-and four band reflectance (Rrs) data (400 nm-565 nm) and their ratios as input parameters to estimate surface seawater ƒCO 2 (270-430 µatm). Results show that RF generally performed better than stepwise MNR and SVR. The root mean square error (RMSE) of validation results by RF was 5.49 µatm (1.7%), while those of stepwise MNR and SVR were 10.59 µatm (3.2%) and 6.82 µatm (2.1%), respectively. Ocean parameters (i.e., sea surface salinity (SSS), sea surface temperature (SST), and mixed layer depth (MLD)) appeared to contribute more than the individual bands or band ratios from the satellite data. Spatial and seasonal distributions of monthly ƒCO 2 produced from the RF model and sea-air CO 2 flux were also examined.

In order to reconstruct the last glacial sea surface temperature (SST) of the East Sea, we investigated planktonic foraminiferal assemblage in the marine sediments of a piston core recovered from the Ulleung Basin, East Sea. For core top, the most dominant species is right coiling Neogloboquadrina incompta, while left coiling Neogloboquadrina pachyderma and Globigerina bulloides clearly dominate the glacial assemblages. Based on fauna count, we reconstructed past SST using modern analog technique (MAT) with a global dataset. However, the application of the global dataset may hinder the reconstruction of regional SST. In order to validate this, we tested for the foraminiferal assemblages of 51 surface sediments in the East Sea with MAT and the global dataset. The results show that the estimated MAT temperatures were completely different from the real SST of core top sites, indicating that MAT with the global dataset may not be applicable for the East Sea SST reconstruction. Therefore, we developed new statistical calculation method using East Sea fauna dataset only. According to this method, the glacial SST was 2°C lower than today for August, and 6°C lower for February. This glacial−interglacial change of August temperature is relatively smaller than other results, while February temperature is comparable.

Surface environments in the Japan Sea during the last glacial maximum (LGM: ka) are poorly constrained. Microfossil studies based on sediment core data (i.e., on changes in diatom, planktonic foraminifera, radiolaria, and calcareous nannofossil assemblages) indicate that sea surface temperatures (SSTs) during the LGM were much colder than those of today. Studies on the degree of unsaturation of alkenones in sediment cores suggest that SSTs during the LGM were -°C higher than present-day values. Furthermore, there are several different estimates ( -) of sea surface salinity (SSS) at the LGM compared to present-day value (ca. ). In this study, we compared the relative abundance of left-coiling specimens of a planktonic foraminiferal species (Neogloboquardrina pachyderma) in four sediment cores retrieved from the southern part of the Japan Sea with the horizontal distribution of left-coiling specimens in surface sediments of the northern part of the Japan Sea. Our results reveal that surface conditions similar to those in the presentday northern Japan Sea ( -°N) were present in the southern Japan Sea ( -°N) during the LGM, and that SSTs in May in the southern Japan Sea at the LGM (ca. -°C) were less than presentday May SSTs ( -°C). Moreover, our estimates of SSSs calculated from oxygen isotope values of planktonic foraminifera in several cores indicate that SSSs during the LGM were low (ca. -). Such low-temperature and low-salinity environments during the LGM are supported by temporal changes in diatom assemblages, based on data obtained from a sediment core from the southern Japan Sea.
