“…This interesting finding could mean that heating altered the cell-wall stability of colonial type 4 gonococci in such a way as to release endotoxin more easily and make it available to cause the same effect on chicken embryos as was found with the unheated and heated cells of the virulent types. Electronmicroscopic examination of heated and unheated cells of the three colonial types of gonococci revealed that unheated cells of virulent colonial types 1 and 5 carry small blebs of endotoxin which confirmed the findings of Grimble and Armitage (1974). The heated cells of all three colonial types released endotoxin.…”

“…Similarly, in studies with perfused preparations of isolated human fallopian tube, pilate type-1 gonococci grown in vitro adhered (Ward, Watt and Robertson, 1974), but other studies demonstrated that non-pilate organisms also attached to fallopian tube held in organ culture (Taylor-Robinson et al, 1974). Anti-pili antibodies occur in natural infection (Buchanan et al, 1973) but pili comparable to those seen in vitro are rarely seen on gonococci in infected urethral exudates (Novotny, Short and Walker, 1975), although larger appendages have been described (Grimble and Armitage, 1974). Thus, although some of the present evidence suggests that pili may be involved in adherence to the urogenital tract at an early stage in the infective process, this does not seem to be the only factor concerned.…”

“…Isolated blebs and possible membranous extensions of different sizes and shapes were seen in many micrographs (Figs 2, 4a, and 10). Other investigators have described similar structures Grimble and Armitage, 1974;DeVoe and Gilchrist, 1975;McGee et al, 1976), and lipopolysaccharides were isolated from comparable blebs . These blebs and membrane extensions were present on the external surface of the cell wall and occasionally wrapped around the cell (Fig.…”
