Surface Response of Brominated Carbon Media on Laser and Thermal Excitation: Optical and Thermal Analysis Study

Abstract: The present study is objected to develop an analytical remote optical diagnostics of the functionalized carbons surface. Carbon composites with up to 1 mmol g−1 of irreversibly adsorbed bromine were produced by the room temperature plasma treatment of an activated carbon fabric (ACF) derived from polyacrylonitrile textile. The brominated ACF (BrACF) was studied by elastic optical scattering indicatrix analysis at wavelength 532 nm. The obtained data were interpreted within results of the thermogravimetric anal… Show more

“…In contrast to the routes that give adsorbed or intercalated bromine species (Multian et al 2017;Hanelt et al 2013), here we used a post-treatment with a 10 mass% K 2 C 2 O 4 solution and intensive washing. This treatment removes the physisorbed reagent by the selective fixing and the followed elution from the brominated ACFs, in the form of KBr.…”

“…Free bromine recombines with the surface hydrogen, and it can be desorbed in the form of hydrobromic acid (HBr) molecules (Diyuk et al 2015;Multian et al 2017). The temperature range of the HBr desorption is ~ 465-530 °C in width (see Fig.…”

“…For AC/Br 2 and AC, the combustion process is completed at 850-900 °C. [24] The thermal stability of AC/Br 2 was also investigated by TGA in an argon atmosphere and by thermoprogrammed desorption mass spectrometry (TPD MS) in a vacuum medium. Figures 5a and b show the TG/DTG curves and temperature profiles obtained from the mass spectra for AC/Br 2 .…”

“…According to the data obtained, the surface of AC/Br 2 contains mainly chemisorbed bromine and CO-bearing centers, presumably phenolic groups. [24,27] The amount of CO 2 -bearing centers, such as carboxylic, anhydride, and lactone groups, on the surface of AC/ Br 2 is insignificant.…”
