Surface remeshing by local hermite diffuse interpolation

Abstract: We propose a method to build a three‐dimensional adapted surface mesh with respect to a mesh size map driven by surface curvature. The data needed to optimize the mesh have been reduced to an initial mesh. The building of a local geometrical model but continuous over the whole domain is based on a local Hermite diffuse interpolation calculated from the nodes of the initial mesh and from the normal vectors to the surface. The optimization procedures involve extracting from the surface mesh sets of triangles sha… Show more

“…Another advantage of working directly with discrete data arises as the CAD part becomes to a greater extent independent of the mesh generator. With such a simple format as the stereolithography format (STL), geometry exchanges become easier and more universal, although some repairing tools acting before the surface remesher may be necessary [7,[14][15][16][17][18].…”

“…The improved remeshing technique is applied directly to CAD models and it is also used to improve surface triangulations which are reconstructed from sectional contours extracted from medical images. All the application examples, including the circulatory system and the urinary system, demonstrate that the enhanced remeshing procedure is robust and efficient for surface grid generation.remeshing is the most widely used technique for the generation of high-quality surface meshes from an STL surface definition [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. This procedure includes, edge splitting/contraction together with edge swapping and nodal smoothing.…”

“…The key idea of the first is to partition a parameter domain into sets of adjacent elements that have the same specified properties [14,50,23]. The key idea of the second is to progressively adapt an explicit mesh by performing elementary operations on its elements until it matches some specified properties [12,44,8,7,21,46,9].…”
