Surface reconstruction of NiCoP for enhanced biomass upgrading

Abstract: 2,5-furanedioic acid (FDCA), as an important monomer to produce biodegradable polymers, is a hot compound in the field of electrocatalysis. Designing high-activity and low-cost electrocatalysts for the production of high...

“…In addition to chemical oxidation, electrochemical oxidation also occurred in the system. In the i–t curve (Figure S12), there is an obvious activation process at an early stage, indicating the formation of MOOH species. , According to previous studies, because of the suitable electronic structures, the (oxy)hydroxides are the active species in iron series element-catalyzed electrochemical oxidation reaction systems including HMF oxidation. ,, Thus, both pathways (i.e., electrochemical and chemical oxidation) coexist during the upgrading process from HMF to FDCA in this study.…”

“…The HMF was hardly oxidized when the applied potential was below 1.475 V, and this can be attributed to the lack of active species (i.e., metal (oxy)hydroxides) . According to previous reports, the in situ formed active species that involve high valence metal are crucial for the electrochemical oxidation reactions. , Thus, it is reasonable that the conversion of HMF will be hindered when the applied potential is not high enough to oxidize the metal ions in the catalyst. As the anodic potential was increased to 1.475 V, the conversion for HMF reaches ∼90%, while the FDCA yield was only 72% with a poor carbon balance of 83.4%.…”

“…and O 1s signals are observed ( Figure S5 ). As shown in deconvoluted high-resolution XPS in Figure 4 A, the as-prepared NiP@Ni/C catalyst has a clear Ni 2p 3/2 peak at 853.5 eV, corresponding to nickel species in the Ni-P solution, and also a Ni 0 2p 3/2 peak at 852.1 eV, representing a small amount of pure Ni in the catalyst ( Li et al., 2016 ; Wang et al., 2021 ). Two other 2p 3/2 peaks of Ni 2+ in Ni(OH) 2 and Ni 3+ in NiOOH formed by oxidation are also clearly seen as peaks at 855.7 and 857.2 eV ( Wang et al., 2020 ).…”

“…However, the homogeneous catalysis method still faces feasibility challenges including material and separation costs. Among recent studies, various transition metal-based electrocatalysts were synthesized with p-block elements such as boron, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and sulfur ( Barwe et al., 2018 ; Jiang et al., 2016 ; Kang et al., 2019 ; Liu et al., 2018 ; Wang et al., 2021 ; You et al., 2016a , 2016b ; Zhang et al., 2019 ). Since then, some impressive results have been obtained in electrochemical performance metrics, such as the total current density (>200 mA cm −2 by Ni 2 P NPA/NF and Ni 3 S 2 /NF) ( You et al., 2016a , 2016b ) and Faradaic efficiency (98–99% by NiFe LDH and Ni 3 N@C) ( Liu et al., 2018 ; Zhang et al., 2019 ).…”

“…S7, evidencing the existence of CoP nanoparticles outside of the NiCoP nanowires. In addition, the oxygen signal can also be detected, indicating the partial oxidation of the outer layer into an amorphous phosphorus oxide layer 31 . Two sets of interplanar spacing of 0.202 nm and 0.285 nm can be detected in HRTEM (Fig.…”
