Surface properties and cell adhesion onto allylamine-plasma and amine-plasma coated glass coverslips

Abstract: Surface properties of nanoparticles to be used for radioimmunotherapy need to be optimized to allow antibody conjugation while ensuring biocompatibility. We aimed to investigate cell adhesion and proliferation onto different coatings to be used for nanoparticles. C, CH(x) or SiO(x) coatings deposited onto glass coverslips by magnetron deposition as well as nitrogen functionalized materials synthetized using different reactive sputtering conditions and PPAA (plasma polymerized allylamine) coating, were compared… Show more

“…Additionally, IL‐8 production is known to be caused by cells undergoing on inflammatory response 48. As observed in Figure 9, cells seeded on the different coatings did not produce more IL‐8 than the cells seeded on glass (positive control).…”

“…For example, Vanwachem et al50 have shown that a moderate hydrophilicity of polymeric surfaces improved the adsorption of serum proteins, affecting positively the cell attachment and spreading. Crespin et al48 have confirmed that endothelial cell density was higher on a‐C:H coatings with water contact angle values between 40° and 75°. This tendency is in agreement with the wettability observed for the present a‐C:H coatings.…”

“…An example application is given in Figure 7 whereby boron nitride nano-tubes (BNNT) were plasma surface treated to modify the BNNT wettability and adhesion characteristics. On account of its benefits, it has extensively been shown that plasma surface treatment can give rise to an enhanced biological cell response [130][131][132][133][134][135][136][137]. Having said this, Arefi-Khonsari et al [138] showed that certain polymers such as octadecyltrichlorosilane self-assembled monolayers (OTS-SAM) are much more resistant to this technique compared to polyethylene (PE), indicating that the successful implementation of this particular technique is material dependent.…”

“…Recently, studies on nitrogen‐containing functional groups, e.g., amine and amide groups, have attracted enormous attention for its numerous biomedical applications such as protein, DNA and biomolecule immobilization, cell adhesion, biosensor fabrication, and influence on mesenchymal stem cell differentiation . These researches show that existence of nitrogen‐containing groups near material surface is not only critical but also essential in the development of biomaterials and bio‐devices.…”
