Ozone is one of the most toxic admixtures in the troposphere. Therefore, it is among the main pollutants and its concentration is monitored. This work represents an overview of continuous measurements of the ozone content in the troposphere on the territory of Russia throughout 2021 carried out on an initiative of scientific and educational institutions at 17 stations in different Russian regions. The monitoring results showed that the daily average ozone concentration exceeded the MPC d.a level during a major part of the year at all observation sites, and by a factor of two or even three at a number of stations. At six stations, concentrations in excess of the maximum permissible one-time concentration MPC m.o were recorded. This requires a more comprehensive analysis of the composition and concentration of ozone precurcors and the development of measures to reduce their emission into the atmosphere.

Aim: to compare statistical data on the frequency of COVID-19 and deaths from it with the ozone content in the surface atmosphere of Moscow in the summer of 2021.Materials and methods. We used data on the frequency of daily COVID-19 cases and mortality from COVID-19 in Moscow in 2020–2021 published by Rospotrebnadzor. Data on the ozone content in the surface layer of the atmosphere were obtained by an automatic monitoring station using a chemiluminescent analyzer.Results. The waves of high frequency of COVID-19 cases and mortality from COVID-19 in Moscow in the summer of 2021 were compared with abnormally high concentrations of ozone in the surface atmosphere of the megalopolis. Variations of these parameters were found to be markedly correlated. The coefficients of correlation of the COVID-19 cases and mortality with the concentration of ground-level ozone were 0,59 (p < 0.01) and 0.60 (p < 0.01), respectively.Conclusion. The observed noticeable relationship may be due to the combined pathological effect of high concentrations of ozone and the SARS-CoV-2 on the respiratory and circulatory organs, which can lead to both easier transmission of infection and a more severe course of the disease with increased mortality.

Data parallel processing in block streams for analysis of long-term series of ozone content in ground atmosphere

The article describes a new approach to the processing of long series of ozone monitoring data in the surface atmosphere called the Data Parallel Processing in Block Streams. The proposed method is based on splitting of a sequential series of initial data into blocks filled with surface ozone monitoring data for one day. Further, a chain is formed from such blocks, the length of which is determined by the total length of the monitoring process. Along this chain of blocks, parallel processing of the initial data is carried out, aimed at smoothing out fast fluctuations. The smoothed data is then used to determine the daily production of ozone due to photochemical reactions, its minimum nighttime levels, as well as the magnitude of nighttime maxima. The possibilities of the proposed approach are demonstrated using the analysis of surface ozone monitoring data in Moscow, Russia, in 2020. The prospects for further application of the developed method are discussed.
