Surface organization of a DPPC monolayer on concentrated SrCl2 and ZnCl2 solutions

Abstract: Transition metals are known to be enriched in organic-coated marine aerosols, but the impact these cations have on their surface properties is not well understood. Here the effect of Zn enrichment on the surface properties of a dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) monolayer was investigated and compared to that of the alkaline earth metal Sr, an ion not enriched in aerosols. Phase behavior of the DPPC film on concentrated aqueous solutions was probed with surface pressure-area isotherms while domain morpholog… Show more

“…The smaller separation suggests that the interaction of SO 4 2À with DPPC is stronger. [28] For the ammonium salt solutions, the separations in the range of 139 to 144 cm À1 are much smaller than the sodium salt solutions. (W ¼ 180 cm À1 ).…”

“…[75,76] The thickness of a lipid monolayer depends on the concentration of ions in solution. [28] The refractive index of organic-coated aerosols will change with the concentration of ions as the particle experiences loss or uptake of water from the environment. [19] The water retention combined with the organic shell on the particles can potentially impact light scattering by these particles.…”

“…Langmuir monolayers at the air-aqueous interface were employed to mimic the organic films that coat the aqueous aerosols (Sobanska et al, 2015;Ruehl and Wilson, 2014;King et al, 2009;Sebastiani et al, 2018;Adams et al, 2016). The stability behaviour of these organic films under irradiation and the impact of photosensitizers on processing the aging of the aerosol are presented and discussed.…”

“…49 The concentration and enrichment factors of OC, saccharides and inorganic ions presented in chapter 6 were used to explain the influence of ocean biology on SSA composition, selective transfer pathways of organics matter and inorganic ions to SSA and to assess physical properties of SSA. 66,103,104 Further, the seawater, SSML and SSA samples described in chapter 6…”
