Hydraulic fracturing is an important technology for the exploitation of unconventional oil or gas reservoirs. In order to increase the production of oil or gas, ultra-lightweight proppants with a high compressive strength are highly desirable in hydraulic fracture systems. In this work, a new type of ultra-lightweight proppant, poly(styrene-co-methyl methacrylate)/fly ash (poly(St-co-MMA)/FA) composites with a high compressive strength were prepared via in situ suspension polymerization. The Fourier transform infrared (IR) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analyses confirmed that the poly(St-co-MMA)/FA composites were successfully prepared. The morphology analysis indicated that the composite microspheres show good sphericity, and FA powder was evenly dispersed in the matrix. The apparent density of the microspheres was between 1 and 1.3 g/cm3, which is suitable for hydraulic fracturing. Furthermore, the compressive strength and thermostability were dramatically improved with the incorporation of FA, which could withstand high pressures and temperatures underground. The obtained poly(St-co-MMA)/FA composite microspheres are promising for application as an ultra-lightweight (ULW) proppant in oil or gas exploitation, which provides a new approach for the design of high performance proppants.

Hydraulic fracturing is one of the most effective methods for stimulation. At present, it is actively used around the world, as well as in our country, in Kazakhstan. Currently, many producing fields are at their advanced production stage, and new fields are in such geological conditions when hydrocarbons are extracted from tight reservoirs. Hydraulic fracturing allows maintaining the economic profitability of the development of such fields. However, like other stimulation methods, hydraulic fracturing has a number of disadvantages, including proppant flowback. Proppant flowback after hydraulic fracturing treatments is quite serious challenge. This could be the deterioration of the downhole equipment with a subsequent frequent workovers; decrease in well productivity. Some special methods including preventive as well as corrective measures already exist in the industry to overcome the proppant flowback problems. The paper considers systematization of fourteen preventive methods. Based on physical, chemical, and technological properties of each listed method, as well as the knowledge of the main reasons of the proppant flowback the authors systematize all methods and propose an initial decision-making algorithm and a matrix of methods applicability. The algorithm and the matrix were tested under conditions of Uzen field, Kazakhstan. Low density ceramic proppants for coal bed methane wells were successfully prepared using flint clay and solid waste coal gangue as raw materials. The addition of coal gangue greatly reduced the preparation cost. The phase composition and morphology of the proppants were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the main crystal phases were rod-shaped mullite and granular cristobalite. Furthermore, the suitable amount of coal gangue added was 30-40 wt. %.
