Surface Modified Polysulfone Hollow Fiber Membranes for Ethane/Ethylene Separation Using Gas-Liquid Membrane Contactors with Ionic Liquid-Based Absorbent

Abstract: Olefin/paraffin separation is an important technological process. A promising alternative to conventional energy-consuming methods is employment of gas-liquid membrane contactors. In the present work, the membranes used were polysulfone (PSf) asymmetrical porous hollow fibers fabricated via the NIPS (non-solvent induced phase separation) technique in the free spinning mode. The surface of the fine-pored selective layer from the lumen side of the fibers was modified by layer-by-layer deposition of perfluorinate… Show more

“…The carrier is expected to interact with one component of the gaseous stream (usually the olefin), increasing the apparent solubility and permeability of the compound in the membrane material [8,110]. Usually, the carrier contains a metal atom with free valences that make possible the electronic interaction with the electronic cloud of the carbon double bond of olefins [8,[111][112][113]. It is important to notice that the number of studies involving separations of mixtures of paraffins with other gases is expressive.…”

“…The average pore size, thickness of the selective layer and pore size distribution depend on the spinning dope composition and HF preparation conditions [6,7]. Recently, Polysulfone (PSf) has been widely investigated as a base polymers for the modi cation of HF Membranes in order to give some special functions to micro ltration (MF) and ultra ltration (UF) membranes [8][9][10][11].…”

“…The 2019 review contains studies on the influence of the nature and composition of the internal coagulant, its temperature, and the contact time of the casting polymer solution with it [10]. The latest review of 2020 contains research on the development of casting methods of HF membranes that are safe for humans and the environment [11] Polysulfone (PSf) is one of the most common polymers for the manufacture of HF membranes for micro-, ultrafiltration, gas separation, and membrane contactors [12][13][14]. In scientific works on the formation of HF membranes from this polymer, the influence of the molecular weight and concentration of the matrix polymer, the solvent used, the type of pore-forming agent, its molecular weight and concentration, the nature and composition of the coagulant on their transport and separation properties has been studied in detail [15][16][17][18].…”
