Surface Modification to Improve Properties of Materials

Abstract: Surface properties of modern materials are usually inadequate in terms of wettability, adhesion properties, biocompatibility etc., so they should be modified prior to application or any further processing such as coating with functional materials. Both the morphological properties and chemical structure/composition should be modified in order to obtain a desired surface finish. Various treatment procedures have been employed, and many are based on the application of non-equilibrium gaseous media, especially ga… Show more

“…Similar to other polyolefins, polyethylene is moderately hydrophobic material with a water contact angle (WCA) of about 90°. Its composition and structure prevent interaction with most other materials, therefore, the surface properties should be modified to assure for reasonable adhesion of any material connected to a product made from PE [ 1 ]. Nowadays, a standard technique for increasing the surface energy and thus increasing the adhesion properties is a brief treatment with gaseous plasma.…”

“…And increasing the plasma power while keeping the precursor flow rate constant results in faster deposition rates and subsequently thicker coatings, but with a higher oxide content. All conditions studied in [96] lead to superhydrophobic surfaces with static contact angles higher than 150°and contact angle hysteresis lower than 6°.…”

“…The physical and chemical properties of the polymer surfaces can be modified by the mentioned methodology for intimate interfacial contacts between two different phases, while these modifications have no effect on the properties of the bulk. These surface treatments show significant efficiencies such as (I) alteration of the chemical structure of polymer surfaces by free-radical reactions of the polymer surface with the surrounding gases, (II) etching of a microscopic layer or selective leaching of polymeric chains with low molecular weight, (III) polymer reinforcement by increasing the cross-links or branching of the polymer molecules, and (IV) cleaning by converting liquid or solid films/contaminants into volatile gas products [10,11].…”
