Surface modification of SiO2 nanoparticles and its impact on the properties of PES-based hollow fiber membrane

Abstract: In this work, polyethersulfone (PES) hollow fiber membranes incorporated with modified silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) nanoparticles were prepared and characterized for a water treatment process. Prior to doping preparation, commercial SiO 2 nanoparticles were first modified using a sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solution to minimize their agglomeration in the dope solution. The surface-modified nanoparticles were analysed by TEM, BET and zeta potential to determine the particle size, surface area and surface charge, r… Show more

“…As can be seen in Figure 3(c2), the membrane presented a large number of fingers and macropores in every porous support, so they may have negatively influenced the mechanical properties to membrane with 5% MMT. This behavior was also observed by Muhamad et al [33].…”

“…In comparison with the vibrational bands of USNS, the relative intensity of the asymmetric CH 3 and CH 2 stretching band for CSNS became significantly weak. This shows that more anionic surfactant of SDSn has been adsorbed onto CSNS than USNS, indicating stronger hydrophobic interaction between surfactant hydrocarbon chains of SDSn and CSNS surfaces (Muhamad et al ., ).…”

“…2e. The results show that the addition of SNS in SPI films can adjust the diffusing, dissolving and evaporation degree and passageway of gas in the films, and it should be controlled at appropriate amount (Muhamad et al, 2015). The relatively hydrophobic SNS changes the micropore structure of SPI films, which provides the passageway for O 2 permeation.…”

“…The details of fabrication process can be found in our earlier work (Muhamad et al 2015). The membrane module (dimension 0.032 m (D) × 0.46 m (L)) was designed to accommodate 500 Unit of hollow fibres with the total outer surface area of 0.658 m 2 .…”

“…In our previous work, hollow fibre membranes were fabricated by dry-jet wet spinning method using polymeric dope solution composed of polyethersulfone (PES) and silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) (Muhamad et al 2015). The addition of SiO 2 in the membrane was to enhance the water flux and removal performance (by adsorption mechanism) of bare PES membrane.…”
