Surface modification of polypropylene nonwoven fabrics by grafting of polydopamine

Abstract: A nonwoven fabrics based on 3‐isopropenyl‐α,α′‐dimethylbenzene isocyanate grafting polypropylene (PP‐g‐TMI) was modified with dopamine both by covalent reaction and by polymer layer deposition involving straightforward self‐polymerization (PP‐PDA) to improve the hydrophilic property of polypropylene nonwoven fabrics. The functionalized surfaces were characterized by structural and morphological analysis combined with the rheological property to confirm the location and dispersion of PDA. The water contact angl… Show more

“…The Θ W value decreased from 117.5° to 54.3°. Chen et al [ 44 ] observed a decrease in the Θ W value from 143.7° to 134.2° after modification of the PP nonwoven fabric in an aqueous solution of dopamine hydrochloride at a concentration of 2 g/L and buffered with TRIS (pH = 8.5) for 24 h at 60 °C and then the samples were washed four times with ultrasounds and dried in a vacuum at 60 °C. This indicates the exposure of hydroxyl and amine groups in polydopamine on the nonwoven surface, which causes the increase in the wettability.…”

“…In other studies, PP surface was treated (oxidized) with alkali or acid and then chemically modified with DA by a simple dip coating [54][55][56]. In another approach, PP nonwoven fabrics were grafted with 3-isopropenyl-α,α ′ -dimethylbenzene isocyanate and covalent coupling between isocyanate and amine group of DA resulted in the modified surface [57]. In fact, the surface hydrophobicity was decreased after functionalization with DA [56].…”

“…In this sense, specific grafting molecules and/or with thin film deposition are applied onto PP non-woven fabrics, whose surfaces were activated by plasma and/ or silanol applications. [12][13][14][15][16] In the present work, a simply alternative to modify the hydrophobic character of PP non-woven fabrics by surface inclusion of mineral particles is explored. In this way, particles could absorb water making these fabrics more hydrophilic without use of plasma, liquid coating or chemical reaction.…”
