Surface modification of MWCNT and its influence on properties of paraffin/MWCNT nanocomposites as phase change material

Abstract: Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were modified by an organo-silane in order to improve their dispersion state and stability in paraffin wax. A family of paraffin-based phase change material (PCM) composites filled with MWCNTs was prepared with different loadings (0, 0.1, 0.5, and 1 wt%) of pristine MWCNTs and organo-silane modified MWCNTs (Si-MWCNT). Structural analyses were performed by means of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and rheological studies using temperatu… Show more

“…The small amplitude oscillatory shear rheometery in the frequency sweep and the temperature sweep modes is a powerful tool to investigate structural variations by observing changes in the corresponding material functions, storage and loss moduli, and complex viscosity as a function of shear rate or temperature. Figure shows storage and loss moduli plotted versus angular frequency for the blends with different amounts of compatibilizer.…”

“…Although waste polyethylene wax and its blends have not been extensively studied in the literature, there are many studies regarding various other waxes and their blends with other material 4–7 . Paraffin wax has been used as model systems for polyethylene for studying electrical conductivity, and the conductivity of wax has been studied since 1932 8 .…”

“…Recently, organic PCM has been widely used in solar energy, building energysaving, electronics and textile industries due to its highthermal storage density, low cost, continuous melting and freezing and chemical stability. 1 Polyethylene glycol (PEG) has attracted significant interest among researchers for its suitable phase change temperature, higher latent heat capacity, non-toxicity, good thermal stability. 2,3 However, the leakage problem of post-melting PCM including PEG is widespread, restricting the application of PCM.…”

“…Phase change material (PCM) is a material that can change the state of the material to store or release energy during the phase change process. Recently, organic PCM has been widely used in solar energy, building energy‐saving, electronics and textile industries due to its high‐thermal storage density, low cost, continuous melting and freezing and chemical stability 1 . Polyethylene glycol (PEG) has attracted significant interest among researchers for its suitable phase change temperature, higher latent heat capacity, non‐toxicity, good thermal stability 2,3 .…”
