Surface jets and internal mixing during the coalescence of impacting and sessile droplets

Abstract: The internal dynamics during the coalescence of a sessile droplet and a subsequently deposited impacting droplet, with either identical or distinct surface tension, is studied experimentally in the regime where surface tension is dominant. Two color high-speed cameras are used to capture the rapid internal flows and associated mixing from both side and bottom views simultaneously by adding an inert dye to the impacting droplet. Given sufficient lateral separation between droplets of identical surface tension, … Show more

“…Hence, the relatively large values of can be due to extra contributions of the Marangoni effect, now acting directly from the fluid arms ( ) to the sessile drop ( ), across the coalescing zone of the drop perimeter. Effectively, these Marangoni-driven flows have been used to explain the fluid transfer from one droplet to another 65 and lately investigated to enhance mixing in paired droplets 66 , 67 .…”

“…16,17 However, this requires a multistep process in short time scales with precise control of the environment, and products are oen distorted due to Marangoni ow. 18 Additionally, the reaction product can form an impenetrable barrier to substrates resulting in unreacted ink trapped within the print. For these reasons only relatively slow reacting inks and/or porous substrates are selected to limit the complexity of the printing process.…”

“…Other studies have also focused on the interactions of consecutively deposited droplets (Yarin & Weiss 1995;Roisman et al 2002;Ashoke Raman et al 2017;Wang & Bourouiba 2018;Sykes et al 2020a). Yarin & Weiss (1995) experimentally investigated the impact of a train of droplets (without offset) on a surface, and studied the size distribution of secondary droplets generated from splashing of the primary droplets.…”

“…They found four possible regimes: head-on collision, crescent-moon fragmentation, touch-and-flop collision and no collision. Castrejón-Pita et al (2013) and Sykes et al (2020a) focused on the internal mixing when a falling droplet impacts on a sessile one. All of these studies focused on millimetre-scaled droplets which are an order of magnitude larger than typical inkjet droplets that are the focus here (Dong et al 2007).…”
