Surface Interaction Forces of Well-Defined, High-Density Polymer Brushes Studied by Atomic Force Microscopy. 1. Effect of Chain Length

Abstract: We made direct force measurements by atomic force microscopy (AFM) at surfaces of polymer brushes comprised of low-polydispersity poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) chains densely end-grafted on a silicon substrate by living radical polymerization. These brushes are characterized by an exceptionally high, nearly constant graft density (approximately 0.4 chains/nm 2 ) and a wide range of molecular weights of the graft chains. This graft density is at least 10 times larger than those of the previously studied poly… Show more

“…Calculated graft density using the organic weight loss Δm 1 and Δm 2 (see Figure 4) indicate that not all the vinyl groups were reacted because the graft densities obtained are less than the density obtained for the silane grafting, being 0.069 chains nm -2 and 0.015 chains nm -2 PSU2.4k and PSU16k respectively. These values are in agreement with the reported range for the "grafting to" method where an interval of 0.001-0.05 chains nm -2 corresponds to a "moderate density" for which it is possible complete wetting 55 as it will be discussed below. Polymer Grafted Configuration.…”

“…It is well known that polymer chains in concentrated polymer brushes are extended because of the excluded-volume effect of neighboring polymer chains. 26) Thus, significant change seems to have occurred in the chain conformation between the brush chain and the free polymer.…”

“…The thickness was three times as large as the scaled dry thickness. 10 However, it is very difficult to precisely determine the swollen thickness of polyelectrolyte brushes in an aqueous solution. In the case of atomic force microscopy, strong electrostatic attractive or repulsive interactions occur between the polyelectrolyte surface and the probe in an aqueous solution with low ionic strength.…”
