“…It can be also seen that the spectrum of SiO 2 -g-PSSA exhibited the absorption at 1180, 1074 and 948 cm À1 , attributable to the stretching vibration of sulfonic acid groups (SO 3 À Na + ). These FT-IR spectroscopic results confirm the successful grafting of watersoluble polymers from the surface of SiO 2 nanoparticles via ATRP process [30][31][32]. Fig.…”

“…Neat SiO 2 nanoparticles did not exhibit any significant weight loss up to 700 8C, except for small loss at 100-150 8C due to the removal of absorbed water [35]. For the grafted nanoparticles such as SiO 2 -g-POEM and SiO 2 -g-PSSA, the second weight loss was additionally observed at around 200-250 8C due to the degradation of polymeric chains [30]. The first weight loss of SiO 2 -g-PSSA nanoparticles up to 200 8C was much larger than that of SiO 2 -g-POEM nanoparticles, indicating a large amount of water sorption in an ionic polymer [36].…”

“…The second step consists of the conversion of -OH groups to chlorine (-Cl) groups that serve as ATRP initiators, using DMAP in a base condition. Finally, POEM was graft polymerized via ATRP at 90 o C for 24 h. which were assigned to the carbonyl (C=O) stretching and CH 3 bending modes, respectively, of POEM, 23 were further increased in the SiO 2 -POEM nanoparticles, indicating successful graft polymerization of POEM via ATRP. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) also revealed that about 8 wt% of POEM was successfully grafted onto the SiO 2 nanoparticles, as shown in Figure 2.…”

“…After calcination of composites at 500 o C, the typical IR absorption bands observed in PVC-g-POEM graft copolymer completely disappeared, suggesting the removal of the organic parts to form Al@Fe 2 O 3 nanocomposites. The broad band at 3400 cm −1 is attributed to the hydroxyl (-OH) groups at the surface of Fe 2 O 3 [25].…”
