Surface Geometric and Electronic Structures ofBaFe2As2(001)

Abstract: BaFe 2 As 2 exhibits properties characteristic of the parent compounds of the newly discovered iron (Fe)-based high-T C superconductors. By combining the real space imaging of scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S) with momentum space quantitative Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) we have identified the surface plane of cleaved BaFe 2 As 2 crystals as the As terminated Fe-As layer -the plane where superconductivity occurs. LEED and STM/S data on the BaFe 2 As 2 (001) surface indicate an ordere… Show more

“…On the contrary, the STM/STS studies on the '122' family are still controversial although great efforts have been put in the studies [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] , with main debate focused on where and how the crystal cleaves. For example, within the BaFe 2 As 2 (Ba122) unit cell, the Fe-As layers have a mirror symmetry around the Ba layer as shown in Fig.…”

“…In BaFe 2 As 2 , a surface relaxation that consists essentially in an elongation of the As-height at the surface has been studied in Ref. 12 . The result of such a structural surface relaxation is that the two FeAs layers of the surface unit cell are no longer equivalent, putting the surface crystal structure in the same symmetry group as the bulk of α-BaCu 2 Sb 2 -namely P4/nmm -where two inequivalent layers appear due to the inversion of Cu and Sb.…”

“…There is some debate in the literature on the nature of the cleavage surface [20,21,[23][24][25][26][27]. We follow the view that this system, in order to avoid a polar surface, cleaves through the Ba layer, exposing half a Ba layer on either side of the cleave [26][27][28].…”
