Surface Flame-Retardant Systems of Rigid Polyurethane Foams: An Overview

Abstract: Rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) is one of the best thermal insulation materials available, but its flammability makes it a potential fire hazard. Due to its porous nature, the large specific surface area is the key factor for easy ignition and rapid fires spread when exposed to heat sources. The burning process of RPUF mainly takes place on the surface. Therefore, if a flame-retardant coating can be formed on the surface of RPUF, it can effectively reduce or stop the flame propagation on the surface of RPUF, fu… Show more

“…RPUF can cover intricate shapes as a coating material by using the spray method, but the adhesion is dependent on the chemical structure of the polymer matrix and is expected to be rigid at ambient temperature conditions but flexible at cryogenic conditions. This makes RPUF one of the excellent thermal insulation materials available [22], [23]. Also, in the cosmetic industry, RPUF pumices are considered a good substitute for natural pumices because of their considerable size, shape, and color control during production.…”

“…To date, various flame retardants have been developed to achieve satisfactory fire resistance in different polymer materials, such as halogenated flame retardants [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ], inorganic layered compounds [ 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 ], and phosphorous–nitrogen intumescent flame retardants [ 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 ]. Flame-retardant polymers and their composites have been used widely in construction, electronics, transportation, and so on [ 28 , 29 , 30 ]. Regarding the preparation of flame retardants, the conventional method is liquid-phase synthesis [ 31 , 32 ], in which organic solvents and complicated purification are always required.…”

“…[11][12][13][14] The incorporation of RPUF in the form of microcapsules has not been extensively studied. 15 Based on this convenient improvement idea, in this study, a core-shell flame retardant PMDOPO was successfully synthesized with PMMA as the shell and DOPO as the core, and RPUF/PMDOPO composite foam material was obtained by incorporating it into RPUF. The microstructure, mechanical properties, and flame retardant mechanism of PMDOPO and RPUF/PMDOPO were investigated by universal testing machine, scanning electron microscope, thermogravimetric analysis, x-ray electron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and vertical combustion test.…”
