Achieving highly tunable and localized surface plasmon resonance up to near infrared (NIR) regions is a key target in nanoplasmonics. In particular, a self-assembly process capable of producing highly uniform and solution-processable nanomaterials with tailor-made plasmonic properties is lacking. We herein address this problem through a conjunctive use of wet Ag soldering and dry thermal sintering to produce nanodimer-derived structures with precisely engineered charge-transfer plasmon (CTP). The sintered dimers are water soluble, featuring gradually shifted CTP spanning an 800 nm wavelength range (up to NIR II). Upon silica removal, the products are grafted by DNA to offer surface functionality. This process is also adaptable to DNA-linked AuNP dimers toward plasmonic meta-materials via DNA-guided soldering and sintering.

A new strategy named integrated plasmon-enhanced Raman scattering (iPERS) spectroscopy that features a configuration of evanescent field excitation and inverted collection is presented, which well unites the local field enhancement and far field emission, couples localized and propagating surface plasmons, integrates the SERS substrates and Raman spectrometers via a self-designed aplanatic solid immersion lens. A metallic nanoparticle-on-a film (NOF) system was adopted in this configuration because it improves the amplification of the incidence light field in near field by 10 orders of magnitude due to the simultaneous excitation of quadrupolar and dipolar resonance modes. This iPERS allows for higher excitation efficiency to probed molecules and full collection of the directional-radiation Raman scattering signal in an inverted way, which exhibits a practical possibility to monitor plasmonic photocatalytic reactions in nanoscale and a bright future on interfacial reaction studies.

Plasmon‐driven catalysis has attracted great attention in recent years, but the reaction efficiency remains to be improved. Photothermal Fe5C2@Au core–shell nanostructures are fabricated through a self‐assembly process of Fe5C2 and Au nanoparticles (NPs) with the assistance of hexanethiol, which can be highly efficient surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) platforms for the study of plasmon‐driven dimerization of 4‐aminothiophenol (4‐ATP) and 4‐nitrothiophenol (4‐NTP). As compared to bare Au NPs, much accelerated reaction kinetics can be achieved on the Fe5C2@Au core–shell nanostructures by quantitatively determining the Raman intensity of the ν(N=N) band in the generated 4,4′‐dimercaptobenzene (DMAB). The photothermal effect from the Fe5C2 NPs may lower the energy barrier and generate more hot electrons for the plasmon‐driven catalysis. This photothermal route may open up new avenues for enhancing the reaction rate and broadening the research area of the plasmon‐driven catalysis.
