Surface-Enhanced Plasmon Splitting in a Liquid-Crystal-Coated Gold Nanoparticle

Abstract: We show that, when a gold nanoparticle is coated by a thin layer of nematic liquid crystal, the deformation produced by the nanoparticle surface can enhance the splitting of the nanoparticle surface plasmon. We consider three plausible liquid crystal director configurations in zero electric field: boojum pair (north-south pole configuration), baseball (tetrahedral), and homogeneous. From a calculation using the Discrete Dipole Approximation, we find that the surface plasmon splitting is largest for the boojum … Show more

“…These SPP waves propagate along the interface of GNP and dielectric which end up in both media for some distance. The resulting behavior of SPP has shown that the boojam pair with planar configuration of LC director around GNP is more stable in comparison with Saturn ring and hedgehogs [7,18].…”

“…Stimulusinduced changes in the orientation of the director cause changes in the refractive index experienced by the incident light. Because of their switchable optical property and mature technology, LCs have been broadly applied to the field of AMP [69][70][71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78]. A couple of examples are given below to illustrate the working principles based on different metal nanostructures and external stimuli.…”

“…For example, in the work [3] it was shown that due to formation of oriented layers of the LC molecules around ANP, plasma levels are split. In the works [4,5], being based on studies of the optical characteristics inherent to the mixture of ANP with LC, it was shown that aggregation of ANP can be reduced if using LC that has a smectic phase.…”
