Surface display system for probiotics and its application in aquaculture

Abstract: Aquaculture is a fast‐growing and rapidly expanding industry in the world. Probiotics are widely used in aquaculture and have provided benefits to aquatic animal health, and it is also a promising alternative to antibiotics for control of fish diseases. With the development of biotechnology, new expression systems and novel techniques for the surface display of heterologous proteins in surface of probiotics cells have been developed. This review provides an overview of the systems and strategies for displaying… Show more

“…This finding may be due to the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines and increased antioxidant enzyme activity [ 32 ]. Several articles have indicated that upregulation of proinflammatory cytokines improves immune promptness and increases disease resistance in tilapia [ 9 , 18 , 61 ].…”

“…Other additives, such as probiotics, prebiotics, phytogenics, dietary acidifiers and immunostimulants, directly affect animal performance and health [ 6 , 7 , 8 ]. Functional feeds containing gut health promotors have become a key component of any strategy to prevent diseases in aquaculture, particularly when opportunistic bacteria are suspected to be a major cause of mortality [ 9 , 10 ]. Gut health promotors combine different modes of action, including modulating the intestinal microbial flora, stimulating the local immunity of the gut and improving the histological intestinal structure [ 11 ].…”

“…Probiotics can be used as an alternative for controlling diseases in fish caused by pathogenic microorganisms [43] . As according to Sadeghi et al (2021) [44] and Yao et al (2020) [45] probiotics have a beneficial effect on gut health and innate immunity, due to the live nature of probiotics that can compete with pathogenic microorganisms and colonize in the digestive tract. Multispecies can help increase specific or non-specific immune systems in fish, by inducing phagocytic cells, lysozymes and various cytokinins [46] .…”

“…Therefore, health management of aquaculture is of great importance for food security, food safety, the environment, and sustainable development of the aquaculture industry. Moreover, candidate alternatives, e.g., probiotics and plant bioactive compounds to replace antibiotics, could also be promising, contributing to the management of aquaculture fish health (Yao et al, 2020).…”
