Surface Characteristics and Cell Adhesion: A Comparative Study of Four Commercial Dental Implants

Abstract: Implant systems have distinct differences in surface properties, leading to different cell adhesion results. Further in vivo study is needed to study the impact of the surface characteristics and different cell adhesion on the osseointegration between implant and bone.

“…There are numerous reports that reveal the surface roughness as one of the most important factors affecting the rate of osseointegration [7][8][9]. Roughened surfaces effect positively osseointegration procedure [1,10,11]. Roughened surface of implant enables tissue attachment to the implant that results in a mechanical locking of implant inside the body.…”

“…Dental implant has become a routine treatment option in dentistry. The success of a dental implants is mainly based on the osseointegration that is defined as "the direct contact between the bone tissue and the dental implant surface, without fibrous tissue growing at the interface" [1,2]. The quality of direct contact between the implant and surrounding bone is very important for short-and long-term clinical success of dental implants [3,4].…”

“…The authors of those studies interpreted the data to indicate that hydrophilicity improves biocompatibility of the SLA surface to the implant during osseointegration [53][54][55][56]. At the in vitro level, bone cell adhesion is higher on the hydrophilic SLA surface than on the anodized or calcium phosphate-coated surface [57]. However, in vivo studies are difficult to find significant differences in bone responses between the hydrophilic SLA and other surfaces, except the studies comparing the hydrophilic SLA with its predecessor (hydrophobic SLA) [58][59][60].…”
