Supramolecular tripodal Au(i) assemblies in water. Interactions with a pyrene fluorescent probe

Abstract: The synthesis of three gold(i) tripodal complexes derived from tripropargylamine and containing the water soluble phosphines PTA (1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane), DAPTA (3,7-diacetyl-1,3,7-triaza-5-phosphabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane) and TPPTS (triphenylphosfine-3,3′,3′′-trisulfonic acid trisodium salt) is described here.

“…This was compatible with excimer emission, which could be ascribed to the higher polarity of the PMMA matrix and the highly apolar character of the gold complexes, allowing them to self-assemble in this medium. The larger affected changes in 3 and 4 with respect to 1 supported the involvement of the Au(I) atom in the Au···Au or Au···π excimeric aggregates [7,24,25]. The presence of alkynyl and aromatic moieties in the studied complexes led us to the possibility of obtaining heterometallic complexes containing not only Au(I), but also another heavy metal atom, such as Ag(I), able to coordinate to these groups.…”

“…There has been increasing interest over the past 20 years in organometallic complexes containing alkynyl units because of their potential application in many different fields, such as therapeutic drugs, photodynamic therapy agents, and sensors. Within this field, Au(I) complexes represent an emerging area of investigation because of the structural characteristics of their ligands but also the presence of the heavy atom with direct effect on the resulting photophysical pathways.…”

“…A similar approach has been recently exploited by Ezquerra et al, who demonstrated the feasibility of thermal processing routes to form good quality molecular junctions from organometallic assemblies of relatively complex molecular structure capped with uniformly-shaped Au nanoparticles formed in situ. 19 We previously demonstrated the formation of long hollow fibers in aqueous solutions of neutral gold organometallic compounds [20][21][22][23][24][25] due to the establishment of aurophilic and other type of weak contacts, which are particularly favored in polar solvents. 26,27 Additionally, we observed that modulation of the chemical structure mainly by methylating (by obtaining ionic species) and additionally varying the counterion gives rise to the formation of different shapes, from fibers (neutral compounds) to vesicles (methylated derivative containing iodine as counterion) or squares (methylated compound containing triflate as counterion).…”
