Supramolecular systems based on cationic surfactants and amphiphilic macrocycles

Abstract: The effect of the structure of mono and dicationic surfactants and amphiphilic calixarenes on their aggregation properties, aggregate morphology, and catalytic activity in reactions of nucleophilic substi tution in esters is analyzed.

“…Our work is focused on the design of nanoreactors and nanocontainers based on structure-activity relationships. This involves the investigation of both self-assembling properties of homological series of cationic surfactants and their functional activity as catalysts, antimicrobial agents and gene carriers [12,13]. In recent studies [14][15][16], specific aggregation behavior, catalytic effect and antimicrobial activity of self-assembling systems based on alkylated derivatives of 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) were reported, and their morphological behavior differing from that of typical cationic surfactants elucidated.…”

“…These agents are also classified on the basis of the ionic nature of the polar head. 2 STS is a harsh anionic surfactant capable of denaturing proteins while POL is a mild non-ionic agent. The amphiphilic nature allows surfactants to adsorb at the gase liquid interfaces of bubbles, making stable bubble films.…”

“…The use of calixarenes and surfactants [13,14,[16][17][18][19][20][21][22] in the creation of superamphiphiles is of particular interest. It is known that macrocycles, thanks to the presence of a molecular cavity and the preorganization of functional groups, are able to participate in guest-host interactions.…”

“…It is known that macrocycles, thanks to the presence of a molecular cavity and the preorganization of functional groups, are able to participate in guest-host interactions. [16,17] Surfactants, in turn, have ability to form micellar aggregates with a hydrocarbon core, which can solubilize different hydrophobic substrates. On the other hand, interest in macrocycles is due to the specific geometry of their molecules, which is important in the design of drug delivery systems and the development of antiviral drugs.…”
