Supramolecular Switching between Flat Sheets and Helical Tubules Triggered by Coordination Interaction

Abstract: Here we report the spontaneous formation of switchable sheets in aqueous solution, which is based on bent-shaped aromatic amphiphiles containing m-pyridine units at the terminals and a hydrophilic dendron at the apex. The aromatic segments self-assemble into flat sheets consisting of a zigzag conformation through π-π stacking interactions. Notably, the sheets reversibly transform into helical tubules at higher concentration and into discrete dimeric macrocycles at a lower concentration in response to Ag(I) ion… Show more

“…In sharp contrast, the self‐assembly of artificial organic π‐conjugated molecules is a powerful tool to create various extended nanostructures, such as nanofibers, nanotubes and nanosheets . When this prominent self‐assembly mechanism is introduced to a QD system, indirect QD self‐assembly should be realized.…”

“…Although various responsive side/main chain SDPs responding to external temperature, solvents, and anions have been developed for functional materials, there are only few reports referring to photoresponsive SDPs . Specifically, main chain SDPs are usually constructed by non‐covalent forces such as multiple hydrogen bonding, metal coordination, and π–π interaction . Nevertheless, little attention has been paid to main chain SDP by host–guest interaction .…”

“…AG ly-Alap eptides equence was selected as it is the most abundant repeating unit in silkworm silk, and known to form b-sheets through efficient intermolecular hydrogen bonds. [4] Recently,a n elegant coordinationo fh elical covalent poly(phenylacetylene)s was found to form variousk inds of chiral structures, depending on the polymer structures,m ono-and divalent metal ions, and solvents. However,i nt he presence of divalent metal ions, chirality of these helical fibers was enhanced throughm etal coordination and could be transformed into nanospheresw ith an excess amount of the ions.…”
