Supramolecular Inhibition of [4 + 2] Diels–Alder Reactions in Charge-Transfer Crystals

Abstract: Heteromolecular charge-transfer (CT) crystals formed using 1,4-dithiintetracarboxydiimide type compounds and anthracene derivatives are typically capable of undergoing [4 + 2] Diels−Alder (DA) reactions in the solid state. Several examples have highlighted the single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) reactivity of these types of CT crystals at temperatures around 20−50 °C. In furthering these studies, CT crystals with bis(N-benzylimino)-1,4-dithiin and various anthracenes were grown, and their structures were e… Show more

“…Thus, we can speculate that the smooth surface information was one of the key points to understand metallic lustrous materials. The formation of the plate-like morphology of A 1 GC crystals can be found from the study of the molecular self-assembly of A 1 GC during the recrystallization process . A 1 GC powder showed a series of feeble diffraction rings (Figure S13).…”

“…39 Crystals can regrow/ anneal after substantial deterioration caused by reactions occurring inside the crystal, 40 and the use of appropriate substituents can even inhibit the minimal motion required in an optimal Schmidt criterion reaction. 42 One asymmetric 1,4-dithiin reaction has been reported, 43 involving (N-methyl, N′-propylimino)-1,4-dithiin and anthracene which was an extension of earlier work involving the symmetric methyl and ethyl substituted 1,4-dithiines. 44,45 Yun and coworkers 43 reported the regioselective formation of the methyl product in the solid state with both products forming in a 75 : 25 ratio in solution where the methyl product was also the dominant form.…”
