Supramolecular Gel Based on a Perylene Diimide Dye: Multiple Stimuli Responsiveness, Robustness, and Photofunction

Abstract: Design of an extensive supramolecular three-dimensional network that is both robust and adaptive represents a significant challenge. The molecular system PP2b based on a perylene diimide chromophore (PDI) decorated with polyethylene glycol groups self-assembles in aqueous media into extended supramolecular fibers that form a robust three-dimensional network resulting in gelation. The self-assembled systems were characterized by cryo-TEM, cryo-SEM, and rheological measurements. The gel possesses exceptional rob… Show more

“…[20] The technique has been used extensively to study peptidic gelators, [21] but less frequently to image non-biologically inspired hydrogelators. [22] Figure 7 A and B show cryo-TEM images for the para-nitro (1) and nitrile (8) gels that exhibited the maximum dye uptake values within these studies. Both gels exhibit an extended network consisting of high aspect ratio fibers each of which measured approximately 8 nm wide and fiber lengths extending over 10 mm in length.…”

“…In water/THF mixtures, however, the UV/Vis spectra clearly indicated a strong face-to-face aggregation. [46] At a concentration of 10 À3 m in water/THF mixtures (!80 % water), the solutions became highly viscous. This viscous state was stable for several months and to exposure to air and light.…”

“…In addition, the perylene is a classic organic chromophore with strong π-π stacking. A compound with a chromophore could form hydrogel, which may have advantageous photonic and electronic characteristics [39]. Riboflavin with the conjugated aromatic moieties, named flavin nucleotides, behaves as a photoreceptor in the phototropism of plants, plays a significant role in various biochemical processes in plants and also acts as a perfect component in hydrogel systems [40].…”
