Supramolecular Coordination Assemblies of Dinuclear FeIII Complexes

Abstract: Emptying the honeycomb: Hybrid organic–inorganic coordination assemblies are synthesized using modified aminocarboxylic acid ligands as the structure‐directing agents. The structure of the networks varies ranging from a lamellar motif through a densely packed hexagonal array, to an open‐framework hexagonal assembly (see structure).

“…We have schematized some of the typical chemical interactions used for assembly in Figure 3. It is important to note that while these may result in obvious and directional chemical interactions it is still very difficult to predict the final form of self-assemblies involving such functionalities especially when they are combined with molecular amphiphilicity [28]. This is one of the reasons why the field of self-assembly of functional nanostructures remains a fascinating challenge for those involved.…”

“…Typically, high‐spin iron(III)–phenolate distances range from 1.88 to 1.93 Å 2124. Likewise, the iron–nitrogen bond lengths, Fe1–N1 [2.187(4) Å] and Fe1–N2 [2.217(3) Å], are comparable to those observed in similar complexes (Fe–N amine ≈ 2.16–2.38 Å) in octahedral geometry 19,20…”

“…They provide a convenient mononucleating feature with the phenolate oxygen and the RN(CH 2 COOH) 2 arm, and have been used to incorporate various mono-or dinuclear cores [4,5]. Recently, we synthetized the ligand NO 2 -H 3 XDA [N-(2-hydroxy-5-nitrobenzyl)iminodiacetic acid], and obtained the title pincer complex.…”
