Supramolecular Chirality in Azobenzene-Containing Polymer System: Traditional Postpolymerization Self-Assembly Versus In Situ Supramolecular Self-Assembly Strategy

Abstract: Recently, the design of novel supramolecular chiral materials has received a great deal of attention due to rapid developments in the fields of supramolecular chemistry and molecular self-assembly. Supramolecular chirality has been widely introduced to polymers containing photoresponsive azobenzene groups. On the one hand, supramolecular chiral structures of azobenzene-containing polymers (Azo-polymers) can be produced by nonsymmetric arrangement of Azo units through noncovalent interactions. On the other hand… Show more

“…In general, the creation of functional materials has been pursued using the more orthodox methodologies of organic chemistry [ 7 , 8 , 9 ], inorganic chemistry [ 10 , 11 , 12 ], supramolecular chemistry [ 13 , 14 , 15 ], coordination chemistry [ 16 , 17 , 18 ], polymer chemistry [ 19 , 20 , 21 ], and other material sciences [ 22 , 23 ]. It has gradually become clear that functionality depends not only on the properties of the substance itself, but also on how its structure is controlled and how its components are arranged.…”

“…Chirality is a fascinating property of certain objects in nature [1]. Chirality means handedness, is observed in snail shells, gourd tendrils, human hands and even spiral galaxies [2,3]. An object is said to be chiral if it is not superimposable on its mirror image [4].…”
