Supramolecular Assembly of Luminescent Gold(I) Alkynylcalix[4]crown‐6 Complexes with Planar η22‐Coordinated Gold(I) Centers

Abstract: Au⋅⋅⋅Au interactions between the gold(I) centers arranged in a planar rhomboidal array in a novel class of luminescent tetranuclear gold(I) alkynylcalix[4]crown‐6 complexes (see picture) give rise to rich luminescence behavior, with long‐lived excited states and relatively high luminescence quantum yields.

“…5). In agreement with previous calculations, the Au(I)-alkene bond is longer than the (10), several trigonal planar Au(I) complexes coordinated to organometallic 1,4-diynes (11,12), two trigonal planar strained cycloheptyne-Au(I) complexes (13), and a supramolecular complex containing a linear ( 2 -alkyne)-Au-( 2 -alkyne) moiety (14). For a linear N-heterocyclic carbene-Au-( 2 -alkyne) that has been characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopy, see ref.…”

“…This fact concerning the structure, that is in line with the lower (C C) vibration observed in the IR spectra (ñ = 1948 in complex 4 as opposed to 2039 cm À1 in complex 3), clearly points to a stronger Au-h 2 (acetylenic) bonding interaction, contrasting with the relatively low number of reported complexes of type bis(h 2 -alkynyl)Au. [103] The PtÀC, [67][68][69][70][71][72][79][80][81] PtÀN, [52,53,[73][74][75][76][77][78] and MÀN bond lengths [37, 38, 43-50, 52, 54, 55, 64, 92, 105-111] are similar to those observed in related pyrazolate complexes.…”

“…Interesting polymeric gold(I) complexes prepared by Puddephatt and coworkers have also not received their share of attention here [77][78][79]. Likewise, significant work on luminescent gold-alkynyl complexes of Yam and coworkers has not fallen into the purview of the work covered in this review [80,81]. Nor have we been able to review the remarkable mixed-metal Au(I) complexes prepared by Catalano and others [82,83].…”
