Suppressive Effect of Monocytes in Vitro in Patients with Carcinoma of the Uterine Cervix

Abstract: The adherent cell fraction (AdC) of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBM) contains two cell types of opposing function in vitro. Dendritic cells (DC) act as antigen-presenting cells (APC) in vitro, while monocytes (Mo) have a suppressive effect on antigen activation of T cells. In this report we show that patients with cervical carcinoma have a significantly increased number of suppressive Mo compared with healthy controls. The T cell response to Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV-1) and PPD was about the same… Show more

“…A stage-correlated increase in circulating monocytes was demonstrated. This confirms our earlier reported findings where also a monocyte/macrophage-induced suppression of lymphoproliferative responses was demonstrated (8). Our findings are also in accord with those of Check et al (9).…”

“…Aberrations in numbers and responses of immunoactive cells have been described in cervical cancer (4,5,8). Most of these studies show an increasing impairment of immune function with increasing stage ( 5 , 8 ) .…”

“…A possible explanation for this impaired function of the lymphocytes and monocytes could be the presence of circulating immunosuppressive factors or an induction of suppressor cell populations as already postulated by other authors (Zembala et al, 1977;Bjercke et al, 1986).…”

“…Immunosuppression caused by monocytes has been described in several types of cancer. In a recent study on patients with cervical carcinoma, we observed a potentiation of T cell responses to microbial antigens after removal of monocytes by adherence on gelatinhibronectin coated surfaces (3). This type of immunosuppression is presumably of greater importance in patients presenting high monocyte/T cell ratios.…”
