Suppressive effect of microRNA-126 on oral squamous cell carcinoma in vitro

Abstract: MicroRNA-126 (miR-126), an endothelial-specific miRNA located within intron 7 of epidermal growth factor‑like domain 7 (EGFL7), has been demonstrated to act as a tumor suppressor in various types of human cancer. However, its role in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remains unclear. In the present study, we revealed that the expression of miR-126 was significantly decreased in OSCC tissues, when compared with that in their matched adjacent tissues, and its expression level was also reduced in Tca8113, OSCC-… Show more

“…Many studies have highlighted the strong downregulation of miRNA-126 in several cancer types such as pancreatic [66], lung, and kidney ones [67, 68]. miRNA-126 is often referred to as a tumor suppressor [69]. Angiogenesis has a pivotal role in chronic inflammation, tumor progression, and metastasis [70, 71].…”

“…In the head and neck, specific patterns of miRNA expression have been detected in cell lines and tumoral tissues from the hypopharynx, oral cavity, larynx, nasopharynx and salivary glands (23). Specific miRNAs that have been implicated in oral SCC cell lines and tumoral tissues include miR-211 (22), miR-184 (24), miR-137, miR-193a (25), miR-133a, miR-133b (26), miR-98 (27), Homo sapiens (hsa)-miR-15a (28), miR-126 (29) and miR-155 (30). Certain patterns of miRNA expression can also serve as prognostic markers.…”

“…Many studies have suggested that miR-126-3p plays a part as either an anti-oncogene or an oncogene in different cancers [16, 17]. miR-126-3p also acts as a tumor suppressor via the downregulation of intron 7 of epidermal growth factor-like domain 7 (EGFL7) and it may be a promising candidate for therapeutic strategies in oral squamous cell carcinoma [18]. Some studies have demonstrated that miR-126-3p stimulates angiogenesis by targeting PIK3R2 proteins, which are negative regulators of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) signal pathway [19].…”
