“…The modulation of host immunity during infection is highly diverse, both in regard to the spectrum of infectious agents involved and in the immune functions which can be affected. Certain experimental systems and clinical studies have illustrated the immune dysfunction in infections by viruses [20], bacteria [21], metazoa and protozoa [22,23]. In experimental African trypanosomiasis, immune dysfunction is associated with abnormal cytokine response [5].…”

“…The fact that a certain time period was required before NK suppression became apparent after IV administration of C. parvurn suggested, among other alternatives, that suppressor cells for N K cells may have been induced. As " suppressor macrophages " have been found under such conditions in the mouse (Kirchner et al, 1975;Schwab, 1975;Scott, 1972a) we considered it relevant to remove adherent cells from spleen cells from Cp-treated mice followed by analysis for NK activity. As seen in Figure 7, we could not reconstitute the depressed N K activity by removing adherent cells.…”

“…However, small numbers of PFC were generated in mice injected with the organisms 1 or 2 days before the immunization. One sometimes finds such suppressive effects on antibody response when microbial adjuvants are injected before immunization with an antigen (5,10). Furthermore, when these organisms were injected with SRBC together on day 0 and the PFC responses in the spleen of injected mice were examined on days 2 and 4, some adjuvant effects were observed (Table 1).…”
