Suppression of mode-locking by excited-state absorption in a saturable absorber

Abstract: It is theoretically shown that the production of mode-locked laser action by a saturable absorber is inhibited by excited-state absorption. As a result, the laser frequency range over which mode-locking may be obtained will be reduced by an amount dependent on anharmonicity between the energy levels of the absorbed.
