Suppression of floatability of pyrite in coal processing by carrier microencapsulation

Abstract: Carrier microencapsulation, CME, is a technique to form a thin layer of metal oxide or hydroxide on pyrite surface using a water soluble organic carrier combined with metal ions. The present study investigated the effect of CME using tris-catecholato complex of Si 4+ , Si(cat) 3 2-on pyrite-coal separation by dynamic bubble pick-up experiments and Hallimond tube flotation experiments using coal, pyrite, and a coal-pyrite mixture. The mineral samples were treated in 0-5 mol m -3 Si(cat) 3 2-solutions at pH 4-9 … Show more

“…At present, the M9 seam is being mined; however, previous studies and geological data indicate that the M9 coal seam is severely affected by the sedimentary environment of multiple transgressions and regressions . According to the sedimentological analysis, the marine environment is the main reason for the difference of morphological sulfur content. Hence, there are some differences in mineralogical and elemental contents in these coal seams, which need to be further studied.…”

“…Recently, carrier-microencapsulation (CME) technology has been developed (Jha et al 2011(Jha et al , 2008Satur et al 2007). The mechanism of CME is that when organic carriers (such as catechol) and metal ions (such as Ti 4+ and Si 4+ ) are added to the pulp, coordination compounds are formed on the mineral surface.…”

“…The organic carrier is then oxidized and decomposed, and hydrophilic metal oxide/ hydroxide layers are formed by the released metal ions. Jha et al (2011) reported that the synthesized coordination compound Si(cat) 3 2− formed hydrophilic SiO 2 and Si(OH) 4 on pyrite surface (Eqs. ( 3) and ( 4)).…”

“…Researchers [5] , [6] , [7] , [8] have attempted to solve this problem via physical adjustment and chemical adjustment. The physical adjustment method is to change the surface properties of minerals through the action of physical means such as magnetic, electrical, acoustic, temperature regulation.…”
