Suppression of Bacterial Wilt and Fusarium Wilt by a Burkholderia nodosa Strain Isolated from Kalimantan Soils, Indonesia

Abstract: A trial was conducted to suppress bacterial wilt of tomato (BWT) caused by Ralstonia solanacearum using biocontrol agents (BCAs) isolated from soils in Kalimantan, Indonesia. Five isolates were selected from 270 isolates as better performing BCAs through screening four times using a pumice medium. The isolates selected were identified as Burkholderia nodosa, Burkholderia sacchari, Burkholderia pyrrocinia and Burkholderia terricola according to 16S rDNA sequences, fatty acid composition and carbon source utiliz… Show more

“…Species of Burkholderia included B. cepacia and B. nodosa, known as plant growth promoters, nitrogen-fixing enhancers, and siderophore producers have been used for soil bioremediation for better water management, and biocontrol of soil-borne plant pathogenic fungi (de los Santos-Villalobos et al, 2012;Parke, 2000) and bacteria (Nion and Toyota, 2008). Although it is not clear its role, the fact that Burkholderia was mostly isolated from symptomless and S1-like symptom bearing palms suggests it as a candidate to further assess as a possible biocontrol against the CILY phytoplasma.…”

“…Most plant diseases are caused by phytopathogenic fungi (13,20,22). Similar to other filamentous fungi, phytopathogenic fungi contain chitin as the main component of their cell walls.…”

“…against Escherichia coli O157:H7 ATCC43895 (40). Similarly, the improved efficacy of B. nodosa G5.2rif1 in combination with sucrose for the control of TBW was confirmed by Nion and Toyota (28). Disease suppression was attributed to the efficient utilization of sucrose and consequent increase in the population of the biocontrol agent, B. nodosa G5.2rif1.…”

“…Disease infection was recorded using the disease index described above. The quality of harvested matured tomato fruits was measured following the method by Nion and Toyota (28). The set up was laid out in a completely randomized manner with each treatment consisting of six pots with 1 plant per pot.…”
