Supporting the development of biobanks in low and medium income countries

Abstract: Abstract:Biobanks are an organized collection of biological material and associated data. They are a fundamental resource for life science research and contribute to the development of pharmaceutical drugs, diagnostic markers and to a deeper understanding of the genetics that regulate the development of all life on earth.Biobanks are well established in High Income Countries (HIC) and are rapidly emerging in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMIC). Surveys among biobanks operating in a LMIC setting indicate tha… Show more

“…The eB3Kit Biobank in a Box (Bibbox) (Austria), available through B3Africa, provides an integrated biobanking and bioinformatics platform. [ 8 , 20 ] This system consists of seven integrated work packages that monitor all aspects of biobanking, from the ethical and regulatory requirements, hardware and software requirements, a LIMS and bioinformatics platform, relevant training and dissemination and searchable datasets linked with biospecimens. [ 20 ] Once the eBiokit is purchased, the software is free and tools are available in the Bibbox ecosystem for personal customisation.…”

“…Many attempts are being made to implement governance frameworks that are globally applicable, as well as safeguard the interests and address the concerns of all relevant parties. Such an effective framework needs to be fair, efficient, show accountability and, just as importantly, be sustainable in the long run (de Vries et al, 2017;Klingstrom et al, 2016).…”

“…This approach is currently being implemented in the B3Africa project using the eB3Kit which includes Galaksio and relies on these resources to connect the relatively light weight Mac Pro Server, commonly hosting the eB3Kit, to external computing resources (Klingstrom et al, 2016).…”
