Supporting the analytical reasoning process in information visualization

Abstract: This paper presents a new information visualization framework that supports the analytical reasoning process. It consists of three views -a data view, a knowledge view and a navigation view. The data view offers interactive information visualization tools. The knowledge view enables the analyst to record analysis artifacts such as findings, hypotheses and so on. The navigation view provides an overview of the exploration process by capturing the visualization states automatically. An analysis artifact recorded… Show more

“…For example, users may wish to undo an interaction (e.g., closing a diagram), return to a previous state in their exploration history, or open a predefined set of diagrams (cp. [30]). Other features may afford to externalize hypotheses, which physicians have found during visual exploration, so they can discuss them with colleagues or analyze them statistically (cp.…”

“…For supporting visual analysis tasks, Heer et al describe a design space of graphical history tools and provide a review of recent research in this area [13]. History tracking widgets with branching structures have also been investigated for visual analytics tasks [14,15]. For history tracking in web browsers, the MosaicG graphical history constructed a node-link representation of web browsing history with pages connected according to the order that they were visited by the user [16].…”
