Supporting longitudinal change in many health behaviors

Abstract: We identify the challenges in developing systems that support users in changing multiple health behaviors over time, and a development methodology that addresses these challenges. We describe how these methods were used in the design of a system for supporting young women with "preconception care", involving simultaneous longitudinal behavior change on up to 108 health behaviors. Results from focus group testing, usability studies, pilot studies, and an ongoing clinical trial are presented.

“…Those design principles directly refer to design principles listed in the PSD model. Additionally, multiple goals should be prioritized [41]. Many studies highlight the importance for users to define their goals themselves [36,37,[42][43][44].…”

“…First, we removed twelve entries where the publication did not report from an empirical study [5,6,7,17,21,25,26,61,65,66,86,123]. Secondly, we excluded eleven publications where the term longitudinal referred to something different than the study or research method [35,50,52,56,67,69,76,102,129,130,137]. Thirdly, we excluded seven publications where the study had not yet been done, but where the authors suggest a longitudinal study should be done [22,23,31,101,103,108,135].…”

“…One of the earliest and simplest methods involves programmable prompting devices, which are pre-programmed to send reminders to the participants and are useful for interventions such as medication adherence, smoking cessation and adopting healthy habits (Schollmeyer and Elsmore, 1985;Riva et al, 2000;Andrade et al, 2005). Then came conversational agents that participate in a back and forth interaction with the user and help them with activities such as managing stress and assisting patients during hospital visits (Schulman and Bickmore, 2009;Ren et al, 2014;Bickmore et al, 2015;Shamekhi et al, 2017).…”
