Supporting countries in establishing and strengthening NITAGs: Lessons learned from 5 years of the SIVAC initiative

Abstract: To empower governments to formulate rational policies without pressure from any group, and to increase the use of evidence-based decision-making to adapt global recommendations on immunization to their local context, the WHO has recommended on multiple occasions that countries should establish National Immunization Technical Advisory Groups (NITAGs). The World Health Assembly (WHA) reinforced those recommendations in 2012 when Member States endorsed the Decade of Vaccines Global Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP). NIT… Show more

“…Effective immunization decision-making is particularly important for countries that fully fund immunization programs and thus require strong evidence to secure sufficient domestic financial resources while relying less on international recommendations for immunization policies [20]. NITAGs are formal multidisciplinary bodies of national experts that aim to provide independent, evidence-based guidance to national policymakers on immunization-related decisions [21]. WHO recommends the establishment of NITAGs to enable governments to develop objective policies independent of external influence and to improve evidence-based decision-making on immunization [21].…”

WHO recommends the establishment of NITAGs to enable governments to develop objective policies independent of external influence and to improve evidence-based decision-making on immunization [21]. Although most transitioning countries have progressed toward establishing NITAGs in line with GVAP targets, 60% of the countries under study lack a functional NITAG, particularly African countries [21].…”

“…For example, the Agence de Médecine Préventive and WAHO have implemented technical advisory groups on immunisation in Senegal, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Nigeria [24, 25]. The members of these groups are trained in research and the use of evidence and are thus competent to advise immunisation health authorities.…”

“…1 2. It is of fundamental importance to re-establish a National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (NITAG), existing in most EU countries, [6][7][8] to support policy decision making. Scientific societies active in the field of human immunization should be involved in the process.…”
