Support Requirements for Cognitive Readiness in Complex Operations

Abstract: The authors report two experiments studying the requirements for effective decision making in a complex environment. The focus lies on three components of individual cognitive readiness: situation awareness (SA), problem solving, and decision making. Participants performed a simulated society management task in which they could allocate resources to stabilize a national crisis involving multiple interrelated factors (political, economic, environmental, and social). A striking aspect of this simulation is that … Show more

“…While a variety of analytical tools have been designed to support understanding and planning in complex domains (e.g., Allen, Corpac, and Frisbie, 2006;Chappell et al, 2004;Chen and Lee, 2003;Langton and Das, 2007;Surdu and Kitka, 2008;Vester, 2007), the effectiveness of such tools is not often investigated in a systematic manner using the experimental research method (e.g., Lafond et al, 2012;Lerch and Harter, 2001).…”

“…As has been shown in the research of Lafond, DuCharme, Gagnon, and Tremblay (2012), heavy reliance on predictive modeling can, under certain conditions, improve the accuracy of our decision‐making. However, these gains are also accompanied by an unintended side effect: the impairment of professional decision‐making capacities.…”

“…In complex operations, cognitive readiness, which includes situation awareness, problem-solving, and decision making, is essential for effective resource allocation. In addition, supporting long-term anticipation in decision making can significantly improve performance in complex environments, and cognitive support tools can enhance the anticipation of future outcomes [34].…”
