Supply Chain Scenarios for Logistics Service Providers in the Context of Additive Spare Parts Manufacturing

Abstract: Current supply chain structures in the spare parts logistics are changing profoundly due to the influence of digitalization and additive manufacturing (AM). In particular the Logistics Service Provider (LSP) is influenced by the change, as the physical transport of goods could become redundant due to the digital transmission of production data. This leads to a reduction of the LSP's share in the value chain. Conceptualizing a new role for the LSP for additively manufactured spare parts is necessary. Therefore,… Show more

“…With online platform-based AM services, LSPs can offer their broad customer base, as well as new customers, easy access to high-quality AM parts, which are manufactured by a network of selected, audited AM service bureaus. A few insights into such positioning of LSPs are provided by Pause and Marek (2019, p. 56) by characterizing the role of LSPs as “a selector of manufacturer[s].” In our interviews, LSPs are expected to fulfill an even broader role as a single point of contact for their customers. For instance, one of the LSPs (L6) emphasized, “With our competencies in partner management, we connect all the actors from the SC.…”

“…The literature search showed AM applications in various industries that include aviation [17,24,27,34,35,54,56,57,59], manufacturing and logistics [5,9,18,20,28,38,63], automotive [15,25,32,39], military [7,11,22,37,55], medicine [16,52], electronics [31,64] and petroleum [41]. However, most of the literature provides research which is not related or specified to any particular industry sector [3,6,10,14,19,23,26,29,33,36,40,42,43,45,46,[48][49][50][51]53...…”
