Supply chain planning: a quantitative comparison between Lean and Info-Sharing models

Abstract: Both practitioners and scientists recognise importance of supply chain planning (SCP) for improving supply chain (SC) effectiveness and efficiency. Although many SCP policies have been developed in past decades, the debate on the best SCP model is still an open issue. This article compares Lean and Info-Sharing approaches as SCP models, with the aim of allowing a better understanding of pros and cons of each of them and to identify under which condition Info-Sharing is better, and when, on the contrary, Lean i… Show more

“…a production line. A simulation model of a pure flow shop has been implemented in Simio, a specialized software for discrete event simulation (Rossini and Portioli-Staudacher 2018 ; Kundu et al 2018 ). A stylized standard model of a pure flow shop will be used in this study to avoid interactions that may otherwise interfere with our understanding of the main experimental factors (Portioli-Staudacher et al 2020 ).…”

“…There are two broad philosophies of Supply Chain modelling that operate in practice [4]. In the Information-Sharing model, players have 'visibility' on activities of their supplier and ideally also of their customers; this enables real-time monitoring of SC events, to anticipate final customer behaviour, and to prevent criticalities that could happen in any point of the chain.…”

“…Lean literature showed that Lean is not anymore limited to the automotive sector, but has extended its boundaries to other sectors (Stone, 2012;Abreu-Ledon et al, 2018). Several case studies confirm the applicability of Lean outside the automotive industry, such as agricultural organizations (Satolo et al, 2017), engineering-to-order companies (Rossini et al, 2019), small-and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) (Yadav et al, 2019), construction companies (Costa et al, 2019), product development (Nepal et al, 2011), services (Malmbrandt and Åhlström, 2013;Kundu and Manohar, 2016) and supply chain (Rossini and Portioli, 2018).…”
