In recent years, emerging technologies have gained popularity and being implemented in different fields. Thus, critical leading-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and other related technologies (blockchain, simulation, 3d printing, etc.) are transforming the operations and other traditional fields and proving their value in fighting against unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic outbreaks. However, due to this relation's novelty, little is known about the interplay between emerging technologies and COVID-19 and its implications to operations-related fields. In this vein, we mapped the extant literature on this integration by a structured literature review approach and found essential outcomes. In addition to the literature mapping, this paper's main contributions were identifying literature scarcity on this hot topic by operations-related fields; consequently, our paper emphasizes an urgent call to action. Also, we present a novel framework considering the primary emerging technologies and the operations processes concerning this pandemic outbreak. Also, we provided an exciting research agenda and four propositions derived from the framework, which are collated to operations processes angle. Thus, scholars and practitioners have the opportunity to adapt and advance the framework and empirically investigate and validate the propositions for this and other highly disruptive crisis.

Artificial intelligence (AI) as a technology has the potential to interpret and evaluate alternatives where multidimensional data is involved in dynamic situations such as supply chain disruption. This study aims to explore the role of resilient information systems (RIS) in minimizing the risk magnitude in disruption situations in supply chain operations. The study is conducted in the qualitative mode through semi-structured interview schedule for professionals of supply chains. Thematic analysis has been used to create emerging categories. The findings of this work present critical gaps in current information systems and demonstrate how AI-oriented systems can facilitate the ecosystem of disrupted supply chains to save costs and drive efficiency on multiple parameters. The study also proposes a conceptual framework where organizational values and architectural components can be viewed jointly for quick and adequate business decisions in the complex and uncertain disruptions. The framework presents the relationships among AI, information systems and supply chain disruption. Installing appropriate AI-based data acquisition, processing and selftraining capabilities along with information system infrastructure can help organizations lessen the impact of supply chain disruption while aligning the transportation network and ensuring geographically-suitable supply chains and cybersecurity. Finally, the implications for theory and practice with the limitations and scope for future research are described.

Enhanced Variable Neighborhood Search-Based Recovery Supplier Selection for Post-Disruption Supply Networks

With the increasing reliance on global sourcing and the growth in the likelihood of disruptive incidents, today’s supply networks are more prone to unexpected natural and man-made disruptive events. In order to alleviate the losses caused by these disruptive events, when a large-scale event disrupts multiple suppliers simultaneously, a single or several critical suppliers should be selected from the disrupted ones to assist them to recover their production as soon as possible. The selection of these recovery suppliers is of great importance in the recovery process of the entire supply network. Thus, this paper proposes a recovery supplier selection method from the view of the supply network structure. Firstly, a tripartite graph-based supply model is proposed to depict a two-stage supply network, which consists of multiple manufacturers and suppliers as well as the diverse product supply-demand interdependence connecting them. To measure the impacts caused by supplier disruptions and to evaluate the effectiveness of recovery supplier decisions, two supply network performance metrics reflecting product supply availability are also given. Then, the recovery supplier selection problem is described as a combinatorial optimization problem. To solve this problem, a heuristic algorithm, with enhanced variable neighborhood search (EVNS) is designed based on the general framework of a variable neighborhood search. Finally, experiments based on a real-world supply network are conducted. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method is applicable and effective.
