In firms operating in low-complexity sectors, Supplier Selection generally leverages on few significant variables (price, delivery time, quality) and it is often left to the buyers' experience. On the other hand, in industries characterised by remarkable product complexity, supplier selection systems gain the characteristics of a multistakeholder and multi-criteria problem, which needs to be theoretically formalized and realistically adapted to specific contexts. An increasing number of researches has been devoted to the development of different methodologies to cope with this problem. Nevertheless, while the number of applications is growing, there is little empirical evidence of the practical usefulness of such tools, that are mainly tested on numerical examples or computational experiments and focused on a dyadic version of the problem, overlooking the wider set of actors involved in the decision-making problem. The result is a clear dichotomy between academic theory and business practice. Therefore, the paper contributes to understand the above dichotomy by evaluating the applicability to real-world multi-stakeholder problems of the two main approaches proposed in the literature to deal with supplier selection, the Analytic Hierarchic Process (AHP) and the Fuzzy Set Theory (FST). Based on an industrial case study, a thorough discussion is developed, dealing with the issues arising during the implementation and practical functioning of such decision support systems, also providing provide practical guidelines and managerial implications.Keywords: supplier selection, analytic hierarchy process, fuzzy set theory, complex industries. Supplier evaluation and selection is a kind of problem which includes multiple criteria of qualitative and quantitative properties. From different alternatives it requires to find the best option using different criteria and opinions of the decision makers. Because of the judgments or the bias of the decision makers, sometimes classical methods cannot be precise. In this paper, a relatively new decision method called TODIM (an acronym in Portuguese for iterative multi-criteria decision-making -"Tomada de Decisão Iterativa Multicritério") is improved with fuzziness to prevent the above mentioned problems of the classical methods. A real life case study for a furniture manufacturing company is also be solved.

Previous studies have proven that enterprises addressing green supply chain management problem may produce an apparent improvement to their stockholder interests. According to the report of Kearney (Carbon Disclosure Project: supply chain report 2010. CDP, London, 2010), more than 80 % of the carbon emissions are generated from the suppliers' activities in a company's performance. Many members of the project claimed that they will reassess their suppliers as soon as possible. Therefore, to combine the carbon management issue and supplier evaluating problem turns to be a very crucial work. Therefore, this study intends to develop a framework of the supplier evaluating process for carbon management by integrating fuzzy ANP and fuzzy TOPSIS approaches. Thirteen criteria of carbon management under four dimensions were identified by literature review and modified according to the opinion of seven experts in the environmental department. The model result in a case company shows that three of the most important criteria are ''carbon governance,'' ''carbon policy'' and ''carbon reduction targets.'' The proposed hybrid methodology has great ability to explain the vagueness of decision maker's expression and better discrimination power to evaluate suppliers in carbon management.
