In vitro cultivation strategies promise conservation and micropropagation of vulnerable or economically exciting plants, especially in Orchidaceae. Numerous reports are available for an extensive contingent of orchids of the most varied genera, and the main issue is related to the behavior of species during the process of germination and growth concerning the nutrients used in the culture media. In Orchidaceae, several evidence support that each species responds differently and specifically according to the biotic and abiotic conditions available for in vitro growth. The main concern is to seek simplified culture media that promote germination and the development of healthy plants on a large scale. This study assessed the behavior of Catasetum fimbriatum and Catasetum macrocarpum in culture media containing commercial fertilizers supplemented with organic additives, compared with traditional media, an economically more viable strategy for micropropagation. Seeds were cultured on traditional nutrient media or with commercial fertilizer and organic additives in different combination. The analysis of plant growth after 120 days in vitro showed that the best treatment in both species was the medium containing commercial foliar fertilizer Peters NPK ® 10:30:20 supplemented with potato and banana pulp.

Background and Aims: Orchids in Mexico are mainly threatened by deforestation, changes in land use, illegal trade, deficiencies in environmental policy and legislation, and a lack of community participation in the conservation of their forests. Erycina hyalinobulbon is an endemic twig epiphyte orchid with a short life cycle and with large flowers in relation to its size, for which it has been harvested from its wild populations. The objectives of this work were to evaluate the in vitro development of E. hyalinobulbon in culture media with organic supplements, to compare sucrose vs. N’Joy Stevia® as a carbon source for its initial stages of development, and to evaluate the development of its seedlings in media enriched with plant growth regulators (PGR).Methods: For the sowing of seeds, PhytamaxTM and MS medium at 30% of its basal salts were used in combination with organic supplement (coconut milk, pineapple puree and banana puree), along with the Phy medium used as control. In order to measure the effect of sucrose vs. N´Joy Stevia® as a carbon source, these two treatments were used, with the PhytamaxTM medium. To evaluate the development of seedlings with PGR, three treatments were tested: the 100% PhytamaxTM control, 30% PhytamaxTM with 1.166 ml/l of Maxi-grow and the medium Chiu.Key results: PhytamaxTM medium added with banana promoted germination by 9.3%, being a low cost and easy production option. Ninety days after sowing, N´Joy Stevia® as a carbon source promoted germination by 8%. The best development of the seedlings was registered in the medium PhytamaxTM without PGR.Conclusions: With this study, it was possible to develop an accessible in vitro propagation system for E. hyalinobulbon, in order to sustainably manage it and favor its conservation.

Vanilla planifolia Jacks. ex Andrews es una especie de la familia Orchidaceae que, al igual que otras orquídeas, presenta problemas para su reproducción natural; lo anterior, aunado a la deforestación de su hábitat y la presión de selección para el establecimiento de nuevos cultivos, ha causado que la vainilla se vea amenazada. Por lo anterior, el objetivo general de esta investigación fue generar un protocolo de regeneración in vitro de V. planifolia a través del uso de extractos naturales. Para ello, se cultivaron semillas estériles en medio MS sin reguladores de crecimiento vegetal para obtener protocormos como explantes. Una vez formados los protocormos, estos se sembraron en los medios de cultivo suplementados con los extractos naturales, MPL (plátano), MPI (piña), MCO (agua de coco) y en el medio control. Los resultados mostraron que el mejor tratamiento fue el MPI, en donde se observó la formación de 5.7 ± 3.5 brotes de 36.9 ± 7.3 mm de altura, y la formación de 2.2 ± 0.5 yemas por brote. Además, se logró la formación de 13.0 ± 1.1 raíces por brote con la adición de 0.5 mg L-1 de AIA, y la preaclimatación de las plantas in vitro.
