Supervision of Substance Abuse Counselors Using the Integrated Developmental Model

Abstract: Little has been written about the supervision of substance abuse counselors. Even less has been written about the application of supervision models in substance abuse counseling. The supervision of substance abuse counselors has been described as vague, fragmented and even nonexistent. In order to provide effective supervision of substance abuse counselors, it would be helpful for the supervisor to use an existing model of supervision. “…This supports Stoltenberg's supervision model (13) for early career counselors needing more structure, instruction, and support. “…Therefore, in order to provide information for drug rehabilitation practitioners, researchers, and administrators in Malaysia to address the on-the-job clinical supervision concerns, it is important to first understand the current supervision needs among DRCHs in Malaysia and to explore skills and knowledge areas that were perceived as desired to be emphasized during the supervision sessions. Moreover, given that "years of experience" was found to be associated with levels of supervision need (11), exploring the relationship between years of experience and supervision needs among DRCHs in Malaysia can help better understand individual needs for DRCHs who are at different stages of career.…”

“…With its formulaic structure, the IDM (Stoltenberg et al, 1998) is the most widely known stage developmental supervision model (Bernard & Goodyear, 2014). Previous literature has highlighted the integration of the IDM within supervision of substance abuse counselors (Anderson, 2000), within supervision of counselors working with eating disorders (Boie & Lopez, 2011), and with an Adlerian approach (Bornsheuer‐Boswell et al, 2013). Although this not an exhaustive list, previous research findings have identified the utility of the IDM in addressing a multitude of presenting concerns in supervision.…”
