We study the Higgs sector of a SO(10) grand unified theory which predicts exact conservation of R-parity at all scales and incorporates the see-saw mechanism. We find possible intermediate scales and light states compatible with the constraints coming from the running of the gauge couplings. Such a pattern could lower the SO(10) breaking scale, allowing the d = 6 proton decay operators to be comparable in magnitude to the d = 5 ones.

We argue that the discovery of neutrino mass effects at Super-Kamiokande implies a clear logical chain leading from the Standard Model, through the MSSM and the recently developed Minimal Left Right Supersymmetric models with a renormalizable see-saw mechanism for neutrino mass, to Left Right symmetric SUSY GUTS : in particular, SO(10) and SU (2) L × SU (2) R × SU (4) c . The progress in constructing such GUTS explicitly is reviewed and their testability/falsifiability by lepton flavour violation and proton decay measurements emphasized. Susy violations of the survival principle and the interplay between third generation Yukawa coupling unification and the structurally stable IR attractive features of the RG flow in SUSY GUTS are also discussed .

Grand unified theories (GUTs) are a very well motivated extensions of the Standard Model (SM), but the landscape of models and possibilities is overwhelming, and different patterns can lead to rather distinct phenomenologies. In this work we present a way to automatize the model building process, by considering a top to bottom approach that constructs viable and sensible theories from a small and controllable set of inputs at the high scale. By providing a GUT scale symmetry group and the field content, possible symmetry breaking paths are generated and checked for consistency, ensuring anomaly cancellation, SM embedding and gauge coupling unification. We emphasize the usefulness of this approach for the particular case of a nonsupersymmetric SO(10) model with an intermediate left-right symmetry, and we analyze how low-energy observables such as proton decay and lepton flavor violation might affect the generated model landscape.
