We present general relativistic magnetohydrodynamical simulations of equal-mass spinning black hole binary mergers embedded in a magnetized gas cloud. We focus on the effect of the spin orientation relative to the orbital angular momentum on the flow dynamics, mass accretion rate, and Poynting luminosity. We find that, across the inspiral, the gas accreting onto the individual black holes concentrates into disklike overdensities whose angular momenta are oriented toward the spin axes and that persist until merger. We identify quasiperiodic modulations occurring in the mass accretion rate at the level of ∼1%–20%, evolving in parallel with the gravitational-wave chirp. The similarity between the accretion rate time series and the gravitational strain is a consequence of the interplay between strong, dynamical gravitational fields and magnetic fields in the vicinity of the inspiraling black holes. This result suggests that quasiperiodicity in the premerger accretion rate of massive binaries is not exclusive of environments in which the black holes are embedded in a circumbinary accretion disk and could provide an additional useful signature of electromagnetic emission concurrent to low-frequency gravitational-wave detection.

The self-lensing of a massive black hole binary (MBHB), which occurs when the two BHs are aligned close to the line of sight, is expected to produce periodic, short-duration flares. Here we study the shapes of self-lensing flares (SLFs) via general-relativistic ray tracing in a superimposed binary BH metric, in which the emission is generated by geometrically thin accretion flows around each component. The suite of models covers eccentric binary orbits, black hole spins, unequal mass binaries, and different emission model geometries. We explore the above parameter space, and report how the light curves change as a function of, e.g., binary separation, inclination, and eccentricity. We also compare our light curves to those in the microlensing approximation, and show how strong deflections, as well as time-delay effects, change the size and shape of the SLF. If gravitational waves (GWs) from the inspiraling MBHB are observed by LISA, SLFs can help securely identify the source and localizing it on the sky, and to constrain the graviton mass by comparing the phasing of the SLFs and the GWs. Additionally, when these systems are viewed edge-on the SLF shows a distinct dip that can be directly correlated with the BH shadow size. This opens a new way to measure BH shadow sizes in systems that are unresolvable by current VLBI facilities.

We review recent works on the dynamics of circumbinary accretion, including time variability, angular momentum transfer between the disk and the binary, and the secular evolution of accreting binaries. These dynamics can impact stellar binary formation/evolution, circumbinary planet formation/migration, and the evolution of (super)massive black-hole binaries. We discuss the dynamics and evolution of inclined/warped circumbinary disks and connect with recent observations of protoplanetary disks. A special kind of circumbinary accretion involves binaries embedded in "big" disks, which may contribute to the mergers of stellar-mass black holes in AGN disks. Highlights include: Circumbinary accretion is highly variable, being modulated at P b (the binary period) or ∼ 5Pp, depending on the binary eccentricity e b and mass ratio q b . The inner region of the circumbinary disk can develop coherent eccentric structure, which may modulate the accretion and affect the physical processes (e.g. planet migration) taking place in the disk. Over long timescales, circumbinary accretion steers binaries toward equal masses, and it does not always lead to binary orbital decay, as is commonly assumed. The secular orbital evolution depends on the binary parameters (e b and q b ), and on the thermodynamic properties of the accreting gas. A misaligned disk around a low-eccentricity binary tends to evolve toward coplanarity due to viscous dissipation. But when e b is significant, the disk can evolve toward "polar alignment", with the disk plane perpendicular to the binary plane.
